I don't really even know where to begin in dissecting this film | i would have liked this a lot more if it weren't for that one really long gratuitous shot of the naked kid with those women, the movie is intriguingly uncomfortable and disturbing in its own right before any of that shit happens and it goes on for so long it just feels like shock value nonsense, which is disappointing |
---|---|
A few subtitle errors did not help to clarify what was going on, but the gist of it got across | No solid story emerges, but a sense of setting is deeply conveyed along with the sense of discomfort |
But if we are to contextualize everything the film is doing, everything the film is going for, we will find that every piece is in place in this wild cinematic jigsaw puzzle.
This has nothing to offer other than shock value, so if you want to watch a shitty underground Japanese movie go for it, but don't expect to put this on your favorites list | This film is bizarre and uncomfortable, depicting a world where children rule and adults are sent away to concentration camps |
---|---|
At some points in the movie the aesthetics are pretty awesome and memorable, but for the most part it's not that special | For as politically satirical Emperor Tomato Ketchup is, it is far more disturbing |
That's what I get for attempting to go into films completely blind ; great introduction to Terayama! It's all fun and games for the kids, but it's not long that their worlds spiral out of…• But this just failed on every aspect for what I look for it in a movie.
17The narration mixes letters from child citizens to their hiding mothers, rules of the empire, and philosophy, creating a surreal experience that conveys a sense of horror almost as well as the images that play throughout the film | I wouldn't call this film pornographic, but it definitely crosses lines I wouldn't dare cross |
---|---|
Inspired to find further disturbing cinema by Pixote, I checked this out as well | It's not the perfect combination of bone-aching disturbance and moving…• They blurt out some bullshit about marxism pretending to be deep and then right around the time of the 6 minute child sex scene I realized that this movie actually has nothing to say and all it's going for is aesthetics |
This might be the most disappointed I've been with a movie that I can remember.
